Health Minister Tanya Plibersek is refusing to say whether Labor has won over the crossbenchers it needs to have its means test on the private health insurance rebate clear parliament’s lower house.
Labor needs the support of three crossbench MPs when a vote is taken either on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Debate on the previously twice-defeated legislation resumes in the House of Representatives at noon (AEDT).
Ms Plibersek was giving nothing away on Tuesday morning when asked whether Labor had the numbers.
“I’m not going to talk about what the crossbenchers are going to do in the parliament,” she told ABC Radio.
“It’s for them to announce.”
Nor would Ms Plibersek talk about any discussions she was having with the MPs, citing confidentiality.
Labor wants to means-test the 30 per cent rebate for individuals earning more than $83,000 and families earning more than $166,000.
It also wants to increase the Medicare surcharge for higher-income earners without private cover, a measure opposed by the Australian Greens.
