A Polish military contingent is set to be deployed to the Central African Republic (CAR) to join French forces in the war-ravaged country.
The Polish forces left the capital Warsaw for the French city of Orleans on Thursday in what was declared as a bid to assist French troops as part of the International Support Mission in the Central African Leadership in CAR, Xinhua reported citing local media outlets.
According to the report, Lech Majewski, general commander of the Polish Armed Forces, said the participation of Polish troops in the “humanitarian and peace” mission “marks a new dimension in Polish-French relations.”
The around-50-strong contingent comprises two four-person C-130 Hercules crews and ground personnel as well as one Hercules transporter plane.
The polish military forces will make the about 5,000 km or 7-8 hours’ flight to the CAR capital city of Bangui from Orleans on a mission that is expected to last until the end of April.
The recent fighting in the CAR began when militias who support ousted President Francois Bozizé attacked several neighborhoods of Bangui.
There are many mineral resources, including gold and diamond, in the Central African Republic. However, the country is extremely poor and has faced a series of rebellions and coups since it gained independence in 1960.
