Victoria’s Fraud Squad has gone to the office of a credit union in Sydney to gather more evidence in its investigation into the Health Services Union.
Media reports suggested police raided the offices of the SGE Credit Union late yesterday to seek more documents into an investigation into federal MP Craig Thomson.
Last night, a statement issued by Victorian Police said a number of warrants were executed in Sydney.
“As the investigation is ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further,” the statement said.
Two credit union sources have told AM no warrants were executed and that they have a standing invitation to both police in New South Wales and Victoria to examine documents relating to their investigations.
The sources have told AM the police have been to their offices several times, looking at several people’s financial records, debts, investments, transactions and that the credit union is fully cooperating.
Mr Thomson has rung media outlets including the ABC to say yesterday’s police action was not about him.
The SGE Credit Union assists many health sector union members with financial needs, and the HSU’s current embattled leader Michael Williamson has been a board member since 2003.
The credit union sources have told AM that Mr Williamson stood down from the board in April and another board member, Kathy Jackson, the current HSU national secretary, has also not attended a board meeting since she was asked to stand aside.
The fate of the dysfunctional HSU east branch of the union is still up in the air.
Lawyers for Mr Jackson, other senior members of the HSU and the Federal Government will return to the Federal Court today to discuss putting the organisation into administration.
The majority of the HSU east branch’s executive want any administration to be voluntary and not court-appointed.
