Police fire tear gas at Odinga supporters

On Saturday, Odinga filed a petition asking the Supreme Court to annul the presidential election, The Associated Press reported.

Later in the day, police threw canisters of tear gas at Odinga supporters who gathered in the capital Nairobi despite warnings from police.

Later, police fired more tear gas at supporters assembled in front of the Supreme Court building.

“It’s everyone’s right to hold demonstrations, but police will stop demonstrations that may have ramifications on security,” said police spokesman Masoud Mwinyi. “Police are taking precautionary measures to warn people to disperse, but if they don’t we will use minimum force. Their presence can create unnecessary tension. Already we are seeing pockets of volatility.”

“I have no hesitation whatsoever in lawfully challenging the election outcome,” Odinga told his supporters after his Coalition for Reform and Democracy (CORD) party filed the lawsuit at the Supreme Court.

On March 9, Kenyatta was declared winner of the presidential election by a slim margin — 50.07 percent of the votes cast. The-51-year-old deputy prime minister had received just 8,400 votes over the threshold required to avoid a run-off with Odinga, who secured 43.28 percent of the vote.

More than 12.2 million votes were cast by about 86 percent of eligible voters, provisional figures showed.

Kenyatta is accused by the International Criminal Court (ICC) of crimes against humanity for violence related to the 2007 election, and will be tried in The Hague in July.

More than 1,000 Kenyans were killed and 600,000 were forced to leave their homes following the disputed 2007 vote that Odinga said Mwai Kibaki stole from him.
