Police impound 80 cars in Qld over break

FOUR people have died on Queensland’s roads and more than 80 cars have been impounded across the state during the Easter long weekend.

Superintendent Craig Hanlon said one in 120 motorists breath tested were found to have been drink driving.

Three women were involved in three separate crashes where the blood alcohol concentration was more than four times the legal limit.

“Those readings are significantly high,” he told reporters in Brisbane on Monday.

“It’s not someone who thinks ‘I’ve had a couple of drinks and I may be over the limit’.

“It’s someone who definitely knows they are over the limit.”

Supt Hanlon said more than 80 cars had been impounded since Good Friday.

Police had recorded 16,878 offences in total, he said.

Supt Hanlon said people speeding, including several recorded going more than 60km/h over the speed limit, was particularly frustrating.

“The consequences if they have a crash are significant and the speed will result in horrendous injuries and property damages,” he said.

A 19-year-old German backpacker, a police officer, a 41-year-old motorcyclist and a female driver have all died on Queensland roads over the holiday period, which continues until midnight on Monday.
