Tasmania’s Premier Lara Giddings says she will not be rushed into signing up to the federal school funding deal.
The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, is urging the states and territories to back the Gonski plan after New South Wales became the first state to sign on.
It is set to receive $5 billion in extra funding over six years.
Tasmania would receive $400 million over the same period.
Ms Giddings says the proposal does not allow the state to decide how the money is spent.
“What’s in the interest of one state may not be in the interests of Tasmania,” Ms Giddings said.
“We always look at these issues from the Tasmanian perspective as to how a model suits and fits Tasmania. At times a one-size fits all approach does not work.”
