Protesters target Seattle shopping malls

Protesters in Seattle have disrupted activities in shopping centers on Black Friday in protest over a grand jury ruling in the case of the death of Michael Brown.

A group of demonstrators began marching through downtown Seattle on Friday evening toward Westlake Mall, blocking streets before marching into the shopping center.

The protesters shouted “No Justice, No Peace” with some demonstrators chaining shut the doors of several shops.

Some stores in the city closed as the protest continued. Police used pepper spray to move people back from the police line. Reports said five protesters were arrested.

“While I understand the hurt and frustration that our city has experienced in the past days, this is a city that respects the rule of law. I support the First Amendment rights of protestors, but violence against property or police officers will not be tolerated in our city,” Seattle Mayor Ed Murray said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, police arrested several protesters in New York City after they voiced their outrage against a grand jury decision not to indict Darren Wilson in the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was shot multiple times by the white officer on August 9 in Ferguson.

Following the decision, violent protests against racial discrimination and police brutality in the United States broke out in dozens of cities and towns across the country.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency and deployed thousands of National Guard troops to the Ferguson area to quell violence.
