Qld minister’s son lands job amid cuts

The son of a Newman government minister was handed a temporary contract while thousands of public servants without permanent positions were being axed.

The Courier-Mail reports Ben Gommers, son of Arts Minister Ros Bates, was given a 12-month contract as a departmental liaison officer (DLO) in the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

It said the appointment, with a salary of up to $103,000, was made in May, while the government looked to force out 3000 public sector workers on temporary contracts.

The job cuts are part of a savings drive by the government, which says Queensland has 20,000 more public servants than it can afford.

The appointment of Mr Gommers follows questions about how many ministers’ children are working for the Liberal National Party government.

The questions were sparked by the collapse at work of Alex Davis, the daughter of Child Safety Minister Tracy Davis, who secured a job working for Ms Bates.

Alex Davis was later charged with drug possession and subsequently resigned.

Earlier this week, Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said he didn’t believe ministers’ children should be employed in ministerial offices, but if they were it should remain confidential.

Premier Campbell Newman also said he didn’t think it was appropriate for ministers to employ their own families.

But he said it was inevitable ministers’ relatives could end up working for others in cabinet.

A spokesman for Transport Minister Scott Emerson said there was no need to consult the premier about Mr Gommers’ appointment because no “additional DLO positions were sought for the department”, The Courier Mail reported.

The department said Mr Gommers’ appointment was advertised in line with procedures.
