Gold Coast police are still investigating the cause of a head-on smash involving three scooters and a motorbike that claimed two lives.
A 49-year-old Advancetown male motorcyclist and a 49-year-old man from Tallai on a scooter died instantly in the pile up around 9.45am (AEST) on Sunday on the scenic Nerang-Murwillumbah Road.
The riders of the two other scooters – a 55-year-old Tallai woman and a 44-year-old Southport man – remain in critical but stable conditions in hospital.
A fifth rider who managed to avoid the wreckage crashed nearby but suffered only minor injuries.
The winding stretch of bitumen is one of the worst accident black-spots spots on the Gold Coast.
Police say at least one rider appears to have been on the wrong side of the road but the precise cause of the tragedy won’t be clear until the forensic crash unit completes its investigations.
