AN Egyptian man convicted of fraud for falsely claiming to be a Sudanese refugee is facing deportation after he was exposed by advanced science.
Nabil Gundi Mish Igladious was granted permanent residency and citizenship in 2007 after claiming he was a Sudanese national who had suffered persecution.
But Immigration Minister Brendan O’Connor says his department had used “advanced biometric capabilities” – facial recognition, document examination and fingerprint analysis – to prove Mr Igladious was in fact Egyptian.
He was last week convicted of migration fraud in Melbourne Magistrates Court, where he was placed on a 12-month bond and fined $500.
Mr O’Connor said the government was now considering whether to revoke the man’s citizenship.
“The government is committed to ensure that our humanitarian intake is reserved for people with genuine claims,” Mr O’Connor said in a statement on Sunday.
“When new information becomes available about people who have made claims, we will investigate.”
