‘Roadside bomb kills 5 in Pakistan’

According to Tahir Khan, a police official, the incident happened on Thursday when an improvised explosive device planted along the roadside went off as a convoy of security forces was passing an area of Mansehra district.

“Five people, including a child and a policeman, were killed on the spot… While three policemen got injuries,” Khan said.

He also added that the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Earlier in the day, some 20 people were injured in a powerful bomb explosion in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi.

The blast hit an area near a political campaign office in Karachi’s Mehmudabad neighborhood, injuring 18 people, including women and children.

On May 7, a similar number of people were killed in separate bombing attacks targeting three candidates participating in the elections.

The attacks come as Pakistan is preparing to hold its National Assembly elections on May 11. The National Assembly has a total of 342 members, 272 of which are elected by popular vote. The last National Assembly elections were held in February 2008.

Pakistan will also hold elections for 577 seats of the provincial assemblies on the same day.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but police officials put the blame on Pro-Taliban militants, who have threatened to disrupt the upcoming elections in Pakistan.
