Romney urges tougher US policy on Iran

“This is a president who has failed to put into place crippling sanctions against Iran. And [has failed to communicate] that it’s unacceptable to America for Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” said Romney, referring to Obama.

He also promised his supporters that he will speak out about military options on Iran, claiming that Obama had “failed to communicate that military options are on the table.”

“I will have those military options … I will take those crippling sanctions and put them into place,” Romney said.

Romney’s remarks come despite the fact that the US government has several times referred to the “option” of a military strike against the Islamic Republic.

In the latest such threat, the American president claimed that although he prefers to resolve the West’s dispute with Iran over the country’s nuclear energy program diplomatically, Iran should have “no doubt about the resolve of the United States – just as they should not doubt Israel’s sovereign right to make its own decisions about what is required to meet its security needs.”

He made the remarks during his speech at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) conference in Washington on Sunday.

Furthermore, On December 25, 2011, the United States imposed new sanctions against Iran aimed at preventing other countries from importing Iranian oil and conducting transactions with its Central Bank.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program, using this pretext to impose sanctions against Iran and threaten the country with military attack.

Iran has denied the allegations and promised a crushing response to any military strike against the country, warning that any such measure could result in a war that would spread beyond the Middle East.
