Russia warns Ukraine over lawlessness

The Russian Foreign Ministry has warned Ukraine over lawlessness in the eastern part of the crisis-hit country.

In a statement released on Monday, the ministry said that lawlessness “now rules in the eastern regions of Ukraine as a result of the actions of fighters of the so-called Right Sector, with the full connivance” of Ukraine’s new officials.

According to reports, the Right Sector group was actively involved in recent unrest in Ukraine, which led to the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych by the parliament on February 23.

Referring to an attack on pro-Russia demonstrators in Ukraine’s eastern city of Kharkiv on March 8 and the arrest of Russian journalists, the statement said, “The shamefaced silence of our Western partners, human rights organizations and foreign media is surprising. It raises the question – where is the notorious objectivity and commitment to democracy?”

It also complained that Russian citizens trying to enter Ukraine have been turned back at the border.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Deshchytsya said on Monday that the country is practically in a state of “war” with Russia.

“We have to admit that our life now is almost like . . . a war,” Deshchytsya said, adding that Ukraine is counting on help from the West.

This comes as Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk is scheduled to meet with US President Barack Obama in Washington on Wednesday.

Political crisis erupted in Ukraine in November 2013 after Yanukovych refrained from signing the Association Agreement with the European Union in favor of closer ties with Russia.
