South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill should use the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting on Friday to fight the carbon tax, the state opposition says.
The Canberra meeting will be Mr Weatherill’s first since taking over as SA premier from Mike Rann in October.
Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond said Labor’s carbon tax would further increase cost of living pressures on all South Australians.
“If Mr Weatherill was doing his job properly and truly representing South Australians he would go to Canberra and oppose Labor’s toxic carbon tax,” Ms Redmond said on Thursday.
“Ordinary South Australians have contacted me to share their serious concerns about cost of living escalation.
“In fact, many South Australians with limited incomes are resorting to growing their own fruit and vegetables because of skyrocketing grocery prices.”
Ms Redmond said since Labor came to power in SA in 2002, local water bills had trebled, electricity prices had more than doubled and gas prices were up by 79 per cent.
