Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond has warned the UK government against any delay on its promise of enhanced powers for Scotland.
Any delay or fabrication by the Westminster on its vow concerning enhanced devolution for Scotland will force people to take matters into their own hands, Salmond said in his final speech as the Scottish National Party (SNP) leader during a conference in the central Scottish city of Perth on Friday.
“So let the message be very clear from this hall and this country to the Prime Minister [David Cameron] – delay, prevaricate, block or obstruct the implementation of what was promised, and Scotland will take matters into our own democratic hands,” he said.
Scotland would eventually become independent, despite a No vote in a recent referendum for the Scottish breakaway from the UK, he added.
Salmond announced his resignation as the SNP leader after failing to secure a majority for independence from the UK in the referendum.
He has set 2015 as the target for his party to win most seats at the Westminster in the UK general elections.
In the independence vote, which was held on September 18, Scots voted 55-45 percent to preserve the 307-year-old political union with England.
Just two days before the referendum, Cameron, Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, as well as Labour Party leader Ed Miliband vowed that Scotland would receive extensive powers, including tax-raising authority, if voters decided to stay within the UK.
However, following the referendum, Cameron said that the constitutional reforms, including those promised for Scotland, would not be delivered until after the general elections, and that Scottish measures would proceed in tandem with changes in England.
