Sana’a airport closed after troops threat

The move came on Saturday after Yemen’s president sacked several senior army officers loyal to former dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Among those who were fired were Saleh’s brother, air force commander General Mohammed Saleh al-Ahmar, and his nephew, the head of the presidential guard.

However, general al-Ahmar has refused to quit and his forces have surrounded the airport.

“No aircraft has taken off or landed since these forces made their threat late on Friday,” a military source told AFP on Saturday.

The source added that the Hamdan tribesmen, who support Saleh, are among pro-Ahmar troops who have surrounded the airport.

In a message to his troops, Ahmar said he would not quit unless several senior defense ministry officials, including the minister himself, also leave.

President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi is tasked with restructuring the army as part of the transition deal under which he came to power.

Saleh, who ruled Yemen for 33 years, stepped down in February under a US-backed power transfer deal in return for immunity from prosecution.
