Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Sunday such hasty measures only serve the interests of outsiders in the Middle East, and further complicate the Syrian unrest.
He said Syrians have welcomed the reforms promised by President Bashar al-Assad, including a referendum on the constitutions and the free activity of different political blocs in the country. The reforms will be implemented in broad scopes within the next few days, Amir-Abdollahian pointed out.
The top Iranian official stated the wave of terrorist activities across Syria is meant to impede the implementation of the reforms pledged by the Damascus government, and to weaken resistance against the Israeli regime’s atrocities.
Diplomats say Saudi Arabia on Friday circulated a new draft resolution at the UN General Assembly, which also calls for President Assad to hand over power to his deputy, a scenario supported by the Arab League.
The Saudi-backed draft urges UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to appoint a special envoy for Syria.
Syria has rejected the Arab-backed draft resolution as “flagrant interference” in the country’s internal affairs and a violation of its sovereignty.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March.
While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government for the killings, Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest that erupted in mid-March, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
In interviews with Israeli news outlets over the past few months, the armed Syrian rebels have clearly expressed their vision for the future of Syria and their interest in establishing relations with the Tel Aviv regime.
However, Syrians have repeatedly expressed solidarity with the government.
