Saudi Arabia has formally labeled Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group.
The Muslim Brotherhood has slammed the Saudi move.
“It is one of the founding principles of the group not to interfere in matters of other states, and this new position from the kingdom is a complete departure from the past relationship with the group, since the reign of the founding king until now,” the Brotherhood said in a statement.
Egypt banned the Muslim Brotherhood in December. The ban came five months after the army removed the first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi.
The Saudi Interior Ministry said in a statement on Friday that it had also blacklisted the al-Qaeda-linked groups of the Nusra Front and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) operating in Syria.
The ministry gave a 15-day ultimatum to Saudi militants operating in Syria to return.
Last month, King Abdullah issued a royal decree saying the country would jail for between three and 20 years any citizen found guilty of being involved in conflicts abroad.
Hundreds of Saudi militants are believed to be operating in Syria and Riyadh fears they could pose a security risk when they return home.
Riyadh is one of the main sponsors of militant groups inside Syria.
“It should be noted that included also are any similar organizations with similar ideologies, discourses, and actions along with all those groups and factions noted on the lists of the [UN] Security Council and international bodies and are identified as terroristic and committed to violence,” the Saudi Interior Ministry said.
Meanwhile, Egypt has welcomed the Saudi move against the Brotherhood.
“We hail it, we welcome it. It is in the right direction,” said Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Badr Abdelatty.
