Discovery of primary exhalative hydrothermal dolostone in the Santanghu area, Xinjiang
Chinese researchers discovered primary dolostone formed by mantle-originated exhalative hydrothermal activities in an intracontinental rift basin in the Permian, analogous to “white smokers” on the modern seafloor. Their study offered important evidence of primary dolomite formation in geological history.

Characterization of winter organic aerosols in Beijing, China
Organic aerosol (OA) is a crucial component of atmospheric fine particles. To achieve a better understanding of the sources of OA is very significant for air pollution control. In the 2012, Vol 57(7) of Chinese Science Bulletin, a paper identified three main sources of submicron OA in Beijing winter of 2010 with a high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer. It provides a new effective strategy for moderating the fine particles pollution of Beijing.

Working models for the gravitational field of Phobos
The Martian moon Phobos, with its asteroid-like appearance and extreme closeness to Mars, is one of the most mysterious bodies in our solar system. In the Vol. 55(2) of Science China, a paper introduced brand new working models for the gravitational field of Phobos. It provides a new reference for studies of Phobos’ evolution as well as orbital analysis for future missions aimed at the Martian system.

Seeing without eyes: Hydra stinging cells respond to light
In the absence of eyes, the fresh water polyp, Hydra magnipapillata, nevertheless reacts to light. New research published in BioMed Central’s open-access journal BMC Biology shows that stinging cells in hydra tentacles, which the animals use for self protection and to catch prey, are linked via a simple nervous system to primitive light responsive cells that coordinate the animals’ feeding behavior.
