AUSTRALIA’S new counter terrorism ambassador says the security threat has not disappeared.
Bill Fisher became Australia’s counter terrorism ambassador within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade earlier in 2013.
“The threat is always there, I’ve been saying to people we’re always at the 10th of September,” Mr Fisher told ABC television on Tuesday, in his first media interview.
“If your motivation is an ideology, we and any other country with a western ideology is going to be a target.”
Authorities are concerned some young Australians joining the conflict in Syria could become radicalised.
Mr Fisher said this had also been the case in Yemen, Somali and other west African countries.
He said another concern was potential threats against the 260 Australian mining companies operating in Africa in particularly troubled northern areas.
“These people are potentially targets. It’s always been a fairly lawless area. You would think if you were a mining company you would want to be careful about protecting your people,” he said.
