Senators to grill US top negotiator on Iran

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is scheduled to grill President Barack Obama’s top negotiator, Wendy Sherman, about the nuclear negotiations with Iran.

In addition to Sherman, under secretary of state for political affairs, top Treasury sanctions official David Cohen will also testify Tuesday about an interim deal reached between Iran and world powers in November, according to the Hill.

Some members of Congress have been critical of the nuclear accord and pushed for new sanctions to put more pressure on Iran.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – Russia, China, the US, France, Britain and Germany – inked a nuclear deal in Geneva on November 24, 2013. The two sides began implementing the agreement on January 20.

Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez, the Senate committee chairman, and Sen. Mark Kirk, a Republican from Illinois, introduced a sanctions bill against Iran in December.

The legislation, which has been cosponsored by nearly 60 senators across the aisle, aims to put pressure on the White House as diplomacy with Tehran is unfolding.

However, support for the controversial bill is losing steam in the Senate, where at least three of its own Democratic cosponsors are warning that pushing the legislation now could undercut the fragile nuclear talks.

In his fifth annual State of the Union speech Tuesday night, President Obama made a powerful plea before lawmakers to “give diplomacy a chance” and vowed to veto the bill if it landed on his desk.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who controls the floor calendar, has signaled an unwillingness to bring the legislation to a vote.
