SES volunteers killed in NSW plane crash

A man and a woman killed in an ultralight plane crash in southern NSW are believed to have been State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers.

Their aircraft crashed and caught fire shortly after 6.30pm (AEST) on Saturday on a property on Stokinbingal Road, Cootamundra.

The occupants who died at the scene were a 50-year-old man and 53-year-old woman, police have confirmed.

NSW Police Minister Michael Gallacher said SES Commissioner Murray Kear was briefing him on the tragedy.

‘A terribly tragic event,’ he told reporters in Sydney on Sunday.

‘The information that I have is that they were both SES but I’ve not had that confirmed and I’d prefer to wait until I speak to the commissioner Murray Kear to get the full briefing in relation to it.’

It is believed the pair took off from Temora a short time before the crash.

‘I understand from what I’ve got in the brief report I’ve had so far is that other SES personnel witnessed this terrible tragedy,’ Mr Gallacher said.

A coronial report is being prepared.
