British government commissions a (sad but necessary) video to educate kids about ‘sexting’

‘Sexting’ is now such a huge problem that British children’s charity NSPCC has made a public information film to warn children and teenagers about the consequences of sending naked pictures to their friends. It’s a well-made film, with a really important message and a good chance of making a difference.

But it seems sad, too. When I was a kid growing up in England in the 1980s, the public information films were pretty innocent in comparison: low-budget warnings against drink driving, not taking sweets from a stranger, and never returning to a lit firework, for example.

The fact we need to worry about all these modern dangers surrounding the 21st century’s blurred lines between sexuality and childhood probably means we should reconsider all the things we are clearly getting wrong as a society. Are we doing enough about the root causes of sexting, bullying, and other ‘Gen-Y’ stuff that hardly makes any sense to ‘Gen-X’ parents like me? My daughter is an 11-year old schoolgirl with an Instagram account; I’m a 33 year-old writer who can barely figure out Twitter (and don’t want to try).

Maybe that’s the problem. Those of us who were born just two decades before our (here’s another stupid modern word) ‘tweenagers’ just don’t get technology in the same way. Since most kids now have their own phones, it’s becoming impossible to monitor their activities and make sure they are safe. But we can talk to them and make them aware of the dark side of the internet. This film would be a good place to start a conversation.
