Sharif vows to continue to fight terror

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has reiterated his government’s firm resolve to fight terrorism.

Addressing a press conference in the northwestern city of Peshawar on Wednesday, Sharif said a parliamentary committee, comprised of members of all parties, will come up with a national plan within a week in a bid to combat the rising threats of terrorism.

The Pakistani premier also vowed to push ahead with military operations against Taliban terrorists, saying his government seeks the elimination of all terrorist elements from the Pakistani territory.

“We want peace in Pakistan, Afghanistan and the entire region,” Sharif added.

Sharif’s remarks came a day after a group of pro-Taliban militants stormed the Army Public School in Peshawar, going from classroom to classroom and shooting students and teachers.

The assault left at least 141 people, including 132 children, dead and more than 100 others injured, according to the Pakistani military.

The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the deadly attack, saying it was in retaliation for the army’s continuing operation against militants in the North Waziristan tribal area that borders Afghanistan.

In June, the Pakistani army launched a major offensive against militant hideouts in North Waziristan Agency after a deadly militant raid on Karachi Airport ended the government’s faltering peace talks with pro-Taliban militants.

The North Waziristan region serves as a major base for the TTP.
