Since 1962, no new Mosque&Church allowed to build
all Mosques & Churches w built before 1962 in Burma
Myanmar’s department of religious affairs has reiterated its claim that it lacks authority to allow mosques to be built in the country, but stressed that mosques and buildings of worship for other religions have been built here without official permission for a long time.
The clarification was made in response to questions from Eleven Media on the weekend about statements made earlier this month by Yangon Region’s chief minister that the religious affairs department had not given permission for mosques and religious schools to open in Myanmar.
The statements follow rioting last month in which mosques and other religious buildings were destroyed in arson attacks and scores of people were killed or injured.
On April 2 an official told a press conference that the religious department had not given permission for mosques to be built in the country.
In response to questions from Eleven Media about this statement, Yangon Region religious affairs director Aung Kyi said that the statement was intended to clarify that the department’s role was not to give or deny permission.
“There was not enough time in the press conference to explain this completely,” Aung Kyi said.
“Actually it was meant to say that the department does not have the authority to [give approval to build mosques]. It was only meant to say that the department is not the kind of department that gives permission. Myanmar has had a lot of buildings from different religions everywhere for a long time,” he added.
The officer-in-charge for the minister’s office of the Ministry of Home Affairs said he had no authority to respond to questions about permission for mosque construction.
In related news, Islamic organisations are dismissing as rumour reports in local media that they will protest against the statements that mosques have been built without permission.
Wonna Shwe of the Islam Religious Council said, “We met the director general of the department on April 6 concerning the statement made by the director during the conference. We have no plan to protest as he told us the department will explain further and that mosques have been built in Myanmar for a long time without [needing] any permission.”
