Sisi orders amendment of Egypt’s unconstitutional elections law within month

TCP : President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi has instructed the government to amend the parliamentary elections law within a month, after one of its articles was ruled unconstitutional by a top court Saturday.

The presidency released a statement swiftly after the Constitutional Court issued its ruling, deeming the code diving constituencies illegal, reiterating its respect for the judiciary, but also calling for paying attention to coordination between all state services to accomplish the 2013 roadmap “as soon as possible.”

In January, the HEC had announced that the parliamentary election would be held in two phases: Egyptians in 14 of the country’s 27 governorates would go to the polls from March 22-23 with runoffs scheduled for April 1-2. Others in 13 governorates would vote April 26-27 with runoffs from May 6-7.

Four cases were filed before the Constitutional Court calling for the cancellation of elections of the parliament, on the grounds that some articles were illegal. The law on exercising political rights was one of the codes challenged, but the court rejected the case Sunday.

The Cabinet approved the parliamentary elections law in December.

Egypt’s 2012 parliament was dissolved in about six months after installment by the Constitutional Court, which ruled it had been based on unconstitutional elections.
