Slasher of U.S. envoy to Seoul had multiple ties to North Korea

SEOUL — North Korea’s description of a South Korean man’s attack on the U.S. ambassador to Seoul as “deserved punishment” indicates Pyongyang’s unwillingness to improve ties with Washington, a government source said.

In a shocking attack on March 5, U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Mark Lippert was slashed on his face and wrist by a knife-wielding South Korean man at a breakfast function in downtown Seoul.

The knife attack left Lippert with wounds that required 80 stitches. He was rushed to a hospital and underwent an operation. Doctors said that if the injury had been slightly deeper, it could have endangered Lippert’s life.
