UK to Call on European NATO Members to Increase Military Spending
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute , the UK already spends on defence 55.5 compared with Russia’s 66.4 (billions of dollars) or 84%. While the USA spends 596 or 9 times the Russian total.
The UK is reportedly worried that under US President-Elect Donald Trump, the United States might opt out of helping the NATO allies in case of crisis, as Trump had said during his campaign that other members of the bloc would have to “pay their bills” first. NATO recommends reserving 2 percent of the country’s GDP for the military expenditure, but, as of July, only four NATO members in Europe, Estonia, Greece, Poland and the United Kingdom, met this target.
