Small country like UK already spends on defence 84% of what Russia spends, yet Michael Fallon wants more for NATO

UK to Call on European NATO Members to Increase Military Spending

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute , the UK already spends on defence  55.5 compared with Russia’s 66.4 (billions of dollars) or 84%. While the USA spends 596 or 9 times the Russian total.

Fallon will speak in Brussels on Monday of the necessity to scrap the plans for the EU army and double the support for NATO instead as Trump’s election provides an “impetus” to the United Kingdom’s bid to encourage other EU members to allocate more funds for defense, The Telegraph newspaper reported Friday.

The UK is reportedly worried that under US President-Elect Donald Trump, the United States might opt out of helping the NATO allies in case of crisis, as Trump had said during his campaign that other members of the bloc would have to “pay their bills” first. NATO recommends reserving 2 percent of the country’s GDP for the military expenditure, but, as of July, only four NATO members in Europe, Estonia, Greece, Poland and the United Kingdom, met this target.
