The lawyer of American whistleblower Edward Snowden has been held and questioned at London Heathrow Airport.
Jesselyn Radack, who is also a human rights advocate, told civil liberties blog Firedoglake that a Border Force agent at the international airport led her to a separate room on Monday while transiting customs.
Radack said the border agent “didn’t seem interested” in her passport and that he had asked her a series of “very hostile” questions that were aimed at emotional intimidation.
The agent found out that Radack was on her way to the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is still holed up.
The embassy will also host a meeting of the Sam Adams Associates whistleblowers’ group, which comprises retired CIA officers.
A similar incident occurred in August last year, when David Miranda, the partner of the Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald, who published Snowden’s revelations was detained at Heathrow.
Miranda was detained for nine hours in London while returning to his home in Rio de Janeiro from Berlin. It was alleged that officials confiscated electronic equipment, including his mobile phone, laptop, camera, memory sticks, DVDs and games consoles.
Classified documents leaked by Snowden in June last year revealed that Britain’s eavesdropping agency the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) was secretly accessing the network of cables, which carry the world’s phone calls and Internet traffic and has been sharing the data with the US National Security Agency.
The joint spying practices by the two agencies include the interception of millions of online communications by ordinary people and eavesdropping on world leaders.
