During a meeting with visiting Lebanese Defense Minister Fayez Ghusn in Tehran on Sunday, Salehi pointed to Iran’s policy to promote peace and stability in Lebanon and stressed the need for further Tehran-Beirut cooperation, particularly in the field of defense.
Salehi cautioned against enemies’ conspiracies to sows seeds of discord and politico-religious tensions in regional states such as Lebanon, calling for vigilance to thwart such attempts.
The Iranian foreign minister also expressed astonishment over hasty reactions of Western and certain regional countries to Syrian developments and their ignorance about the legitimate demands of people in other regional countries.
Salehi highlighted that the most important challenge facing the Muslim world is the failure to form a united front against threats made by the Zionist regime of Israel.
He underlined Iran’s support for the legitimate and peaceful demands of Syrians as well the implementation of reforms pledged by Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad.
Salehi said Iran believes that Syrian crisis must be resolved through negotiations between the government and the opposition, and the Islamic Republic opposes military intervention in any Muslim state.
Ghusn, for his part, expressed hope that the promised reforms would be implemented in Syria.
