‘Some St. Louis witnesses lied’

St. Louis County prosecutor Bob McCulloch says some witnesses lied under oath to the grand jury, tasked with a probe into the shooting death of Michael Brown.

“Clearly some were not telling the truth,” McCulloch said in the Ferguson suburb of St. Louis on Friday, in his first interview since the jury’s decision not to indict white cop Darren Wilson for the death of the unarmed African American.

A woman who said she had been present at the site of the shooting “clearly wasn’t present. She recounted a story right out of the newspaper,” to back Wilson’s version of what had happened, McCulloch said.

Meanwhile, US Congresswoman Karla May was said to be pushing for a state investigation of the prosecutor.

Following the grand jury’s decision not to charge Wilson, protests against police brutality and racial profiling were reignited across the US.

The 28-year-old cop, announced not guilty on November 24, had been a member of the city’s police department for six years.

The 18-year-old Brown was killed on August 9 in Ferguson, Missouri. Brown was unarmed and held his arms up while he was shot several times by the officer.
