Southeast Queenslanders who head out for the New Year’s Eve fireworks will get free public transport.
Fares will be waived on the region’s bus, train and CityCat network between 9pm and 1am to keep revellers moving as quickly as possible, Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk says.
A thousand services will be added to the system to shift an anticipated 500,000 people trying to get home from Brisbane.
These will include more than 160 extra bus services in the Brisbane CBD and services on the Gold and Sunshine coasts.
Ms Palaszczuk says taxi fares will remain at their current rates in the new year, the first time in 18 months there had not been an increase.
She welcomed the Taxi Council’s decision after its six-monthly review.
“Taxis provide a vital service to the community, especially for the frail or elderly who don’t drive … or find it difficult to use other forms of public transport,” she said.
