According to the survey published in El Pais on Sunday, overall 68 percent of the Spaniards said they had sympathy for the movement that was born with the establishment of a sprawling encampment at Madrid’s central Puerta del Sol square.
Meanwhile, 78 percent of those surveyed said the “indignant” protesters “are right,” compared to 81 percent who felt this way last June.
The latest poll comes just several days after tens of thousands of Spaniards took to the streets in 80 cities and towns across the country on May 15 to mark the start of protests fueled by austerity measures a year ago.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s, in power since December, has implemented more than 30 billion euros of austerity cuts as well as tax increases to reduce the country’s deficit and to avoid seeking a financial bailout like Greece, Ireland and Portugal.
The worsening debt crisis has forced EU governments to adopt harsh austerity measures and tough economic reforms, triggering incidents of social unrest and massive protests in many European countries.
