Since time immemorial, mankind has gazed at the static-like tapestry of the stars hovering above the horizon.
However using a keen eye and a long exposure, one photographer has managed to capture the startling speed and motion of the stars as they blaze their trails across the sky.
Olga Kulakova, 27, only picked up a camera for the first time a year ago, but some dedicated late-night shooting sessions in freezing conditions led to this view of the cosmic ballet over the night sky in Kazakhstan.
Spinning around: Olga Kulakova, 27, spends hours capturing the stars on their dance through the night skies
Olga, from the Almaty Region of Kazakhstan, was inspired to capture her images after seeing similar photos online, and she learned quickly to take these stunning pictures.
She said: ‘Stars in the night sky have always attracted me – especially the sky seen over the mountains.
‘The first time I tried to take shots like this was when I was in the mountains and it was -30C – I kept the shutter pressed for about five minutes.
‘I couldn’t hold it any longer because of the frost so I didn’t get the result I hoped for.’
Depressing the camera shutter for long periods of time, known as taking a long exposure, captures star-light over time – be if five minutes or a couple of hours – leading to these types of images.
Olga said: ‘Slowly I learned some
tricks, photography theory and camera adjustments and started to drive
to mountains and try to make at least one descent shot.
‘The better the result was each time the more I wanted to make it perfect.’
Round and round in circles: The stars appear to spin around the Almaty Region in Kazakhstan
The cosmic ‘spin’ is caused by the Earth spinning on its axis. As the Earth rotates, the stars appear to dance around the North and South poles.
Focusing the camera lens at Polaris – the Pole star for the Northern hemisphere – leads to these types of enticing images.
Olga added: ‘It’s quite rare to make
something really good but I was really happy with this set – now I have
to take even better next time.’
