nsnbc : Addressing the press during his visit to Portugal on Tuesday, Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi stressed that the top priority with regard to the situation in Syria must be supporting the Syrian Arab Army in its fight against terrorists.
President Al-Sisi stressed that supporting the Syrian army against terrorist most certainly is Egypt’s priority even though Egypt also supports a political solution. During an interview with Portuguese national television, al-Sisi said:
“The first our priority is to support the national army. For example in Libya, to control over the Libyan territories, to deal with the extremist elements, and to bring about the required stability. The same must be said about Syria. We support the Syrian army, and also Iraq”.
Al-Sisi stressed the importance of supporting those forces in Libya, Iran and Syria that maintain security, stability and cohesion. Al-Sisi also noted that Syria is in the fifth year of the crisis that erupted in 2011, that the will of the Syrian people should be respected, and that ultimately, a political solution would be the best solution.
Egypt has, parallel to Russia, held talks with representatives of both the Syrian government and “opposition” groups in the attempt to find a political solution. However, Egypt has thus far not provided any direct military assistance for the Syrian government or the Syrian Arab Army.
On Wednesday Al-Sisi participates in the 4th African – Arab Summit in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea. Several countries withdrew from the summit in protest of Polisario’s participation. Among the countries boycotting the Summit are Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, and ironically, Saudi Arabia, one of the main sponsors of terrorists in Syria and throughout the Middle East and North Africa.
