Moscow police have arrested a suspect in an acid splash attack on the ballet director of Russia’s Bolshoi Theater. The 32-year-old suspect, whose name has not been disclosed, has been transferred to police facilities for questioning.
The suspect was arrested outside of Moscow after police had
analyzed all the mobile calls made around the time of the attack in
the area of Filin’s home, where the assault took place.
According to police the suspect has no connections with the
theater or the ballet troupe, but was just the perpetrator of the
acid splash. He had an accomplice, the police added, but it’s
unclear who that accomplice was and whether or not he was
apprehended as well.
“There is a hope that there is a trace. If they found a
perpetrator, there is hope they can find the person who ordered
it,” the theater’s press secretary Katerina Novikova told
RT.
“Sergey is continuing his work, every day he communicates
with Galina Stepanenko, who is temporarily replacing him as art
director. All his thoughts are occupied with creative work,”
Novikova added.
In January Sergey Filin, artistic director of the Bolshoi
Theater, was attacked by a masked assailant who splashed acid into
his face.
Filin suffered third degree burns to his face and neck and was
immediately hospitalized. He underwent surgery in Germany to
restore his eyesight.
Shortly after the incident, Filin announced that he knew who was
behind the attack, but did not name the assailant publicly,
explaining that this may disrupt police investigation.
Also on Tuesday police have searched the apartment of a leading
dancer of the Bolshoi Theater, Pavel Dmitrichenko, LifeNews tabloid
reported.
A woman who rents the apartment told the tabloid that police
apparently did not find what they were looking for and left. It was
also reported that the dancer had not lived in the apartment for a
long time, as it is being rented out.
Dmitrichenko himself could not be reached for comment.
