Sydney cabbie abuse claims upheld

A cabbie who frightened and abused two female passengers on different trips, allegedly throwing one onto the pavement, has failed to win back his taxi licence.

Both women had queried the Sydney route taken by Soliman Soliman, the NSW Administrative Decisions Tribunal said in dismissing his appeal.

Mr Soliman also behaved in an “aggressive way” to superiors dealing with the first complaint, leading the tribunal to suggest he “may have difficulties with anger management”.

“We also note that he made a number of remarks during the course of our hearing that might be seen as threatening in relation to the persons who gave evidence against him, and used quite extreme language about them and their integrity.”

The first incident was reported in January 2011, when a woman said she was verbally abused by the driver after she queried the route he was following.

“She said she felt frightened and intimidated,” the tribunal said.

According to a police brief about the second incident in February 2011, a passenger queried Mr Soliman when he did not take the route she had suggested.

She said he became angry and she asked him for his number.

“She said that he snatched the ID off the screen and hid it under his seat,” the brief said.

“She said he increased his speed and she was in fear and called triple-zero.”

According to her statement, he stopped on a side road, went around to her door, “grabbed her around both shoulders and removed her from the taxi, and threw her onto the pavement”.

Although charged with three offences, Mr Soliman told the tribunal he was found guilty only of common assault and placed on a good behaviour bond, without being convicted.

The tribunal upheld the finding that Mr Soliman could no longer be considered to be of good repute or a fit and proper person to be a taxi driver.
