The lawmakers threw punches at each other during a parliament session on Friday, before a planned vote to authorize the completion of a fourth nuclear power plant near Taipei on the densely populated island of 23 million people.
Legislators from the ruling Nationalist Party are pushing for the completion of the controversial nuclear plant, saying the facility’s closure will lead to an insufficient power supply and hurt the economy.
According to officials, the fourth nuclear plant, also known as “Nuke 4”, is nearly 90 percent completed and due to come online in 2015.
Meanwhile, members of the Democratic Progressive Party oppose the plant’s completion, citing safety concerns over tremors in the quake-prone region.
Concerns over the island’s nuclear safety have grown since 2011, when a 9-magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami that inflicted heavy damage on Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant.
Taiwan’s political process has been known for outbursts of violence in the legislature, but over the past few years debates had remained relatively peaceful.
Last month, lawmakers also threw around punches during a debate over a divisive capital gains tax on share trading.
