‘Takfiris sought to raid EU Commission’

Foreign Takfiri militants returning from Syria were planning to launch a possible terrorist attack on the headquarters of the European Commission, media reports say.

Dutch public broadcaster NOS reported on Saturday that officials in Belgium had arrested a number of Takfiri extremists who had come back to Europe from the fight against the Syrian government.

At least two of those arrested by Belgian authorities were from The Hague, according to the report.

“They were planning an attack. One of the targets was the European Commission building,” the report quoted sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, as saying.

The Belgian capital, Brussels, is home to high-profile buildings belonging to the European Union. The Commission, which is the face of the 28-nation bloc, houses several thousand EU officials.

NATO and several other international organizations have also their headquarters in the Belgian capital.

According to a recent report by Belgian newspaper l’Echo, up to 400 Belgian nationals have joined foreign-backed Takfiri groups fighting against the Damascus government, while 90 of them are reported to have returned home.

According to extracts from British defense consultancy IHS Jane’s published in the Daily Telegraph last September, some 100,000 militants are operating in Syria.

The militants have split into some 1,000 brands since the Syria crisis began three years ago, said the study, which is based on intelligence estimates and interviews with militants.

Security experts have repeatedly warned that foreign militants operating alongside Takfiri terrorist groups in Syria could pose serious security threats to their home countries upon their return.

More than 191,000 people have been killed in over three years of fighting in Syria, where foreign-sponsored Takfiri terrorists have been committing heinous crimes against civilians and security forces.
