Teen hitchhikers killed on NSW highway

Two teenage hitchhikers were killed when a four-wheel-drive drifted off the road and ran into them on the NSW mid-north coast just minutes into the New Year.

The two young men, a 19-year-old and a 16-year-old from the area, were walking along the Oxley Highway, west of Port Macquarie, when the Nissan Patrol struck them from behind about 12.35am (AEDT) yesterday.

One of the hitchhikers died instantly and paramedics tried to resuscitate the other but he also died at the scene.

The 37-year-old driver was breath tested at the scene and returned a positive result but when he was taken to Port Macquarie police station for a further test, his blood-alcohol was below the legal limit, police said.

Police have taken statements from drivers and passengers of two other cars driving in the same direction as the four-wheel-drive when the incident happened.

The teenagers’ deaths take the holiday road toll in NSW to 17.
