Tennessee animal shelter shut down pending results of investigation

On Thursday, the Adrion Baird Animal Center in Jacksboro, Tenn., was temporarily closed, reported the Knoxville News Sentinel.

Mayor William Baird had a state investigation of the facility opened after hearing disturbing allegations of abuse and neglect from employees at the shelter. The shelter will remain closed until the results of the investigation are complete.

According to the publication, Baird does not believe that the shelter’s director, Betty Crumley, is to blame.

He stated:

She works with the Campbell County Friends of Animals and in the last two months, they’ve rescued over 100 animals,

I don’t see that she’s been a problem.

Crumley came under fire after some employees stated that the facility was being mismanaged and that animals within its care were being neglected and inhumanely destroyed.

One employee told WATE News that animals were not sedated before being destroyed and often, the animals died slow, painful deaths after being administered inadequate amounts of the drugs which were meant to end their life.

On Thursday morning, the animals at the shelter were removed by rescue organizations, and by the afternoon, a closed sign was at the door.

Records indicate that 80 percent of all animals that come into the Campbell County shelter are destroyed – a statistic which the mayor noted was “high,” but typical of other rural facilities.

As for Crumley, her future with the facility remains uncertain.

Baird stated:

“The state has an ongoing investigation. When the investigation is complete and we get a report, we can take whatever actions necessary to get it reopened. We’ll make a determination of her employment at that time.”
