The head of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) says terrorism cannot be ruled out in the recent disappearance of the Malaysian passenger plane.
On Tuesday, CIA Director John Brennan made the remarks at a rare public speaking appearance in Washington where he called the incident a “mystery”.
Brennan said that there had been reports of claims of responsibility for downing the missing jet, which he said were confirmed.
“I think there’s a lot of speculation right now — some claims of responsibility that have not been, you know, confirmed or corroborated at all… We are looking at it very carefully,” he said.
The former counter-terrorism adviser to US President Barack Obama said it was too early to draw any conclusions about the missing jet.
“Clearly this is still a mystery… There are a number of very curious anomalies about all of this,” he said, adding, “I think at this point we just have to, again, be patient and wait and let the authorities continue to investigate.”
The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200ER went missing on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on Saturday, after taking off with more than 200 people on board.
