Thai protesters: We’ll seize ministries

The angry protesters on Monday stormed the finance ministry compound and occupied its buildings to force Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to resign.

Demonstrators say the Shinawatra administration is being controlled by the older brother to the premier, ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

“Tomorrow we will seize all ministries to show to the Thaksin system that they have no legitimacy to run the country,” said opposition leader Suthep Thaugsuban in an address to the protesters in Bangkok.

The demonstrations in the Thai capital were triggered by a government-backed bill that would grant amnesty to Thaksin, accused of corruption and disrespect for the country’s constitutional monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Thaksin was toppled in a 2006 military coup following a battle for power between his supporters and opponents.

The former Thai prime minister has lived in self-imposed exile for the past five years to avoid a prison sentence on a corruption conviction.
