According to Thailand’s Health Ministry, the explosion happened at Map Ta Phut complex on Saturday and sent a plume of black toxic smoke into the air.
Hundreds of residents have been evacuated while health officials are monitoring air quality amid concerns that poisonous fumes may still leak into the air.
“Police forensic teams are searching for clues to what happened and we are also looking for any more bodies,” said Lieutenant Colonel Charoen Vititkornkul, adding that police were ready to evacuate more local residents if necessary.
The majority of the victims are believed to be factory workers.
Map Ta Phut, which is home to the world’s eighth-largest petrochemicals hub, is located in Rayong, 140 kilometers south of the capital Bangkok.
