This story tugged at so many heartstrings. Mike writes:
I feel like zoos should be responsible for the welfare of their animals until the end, and not just until it stops being convenient for them. I know that in nature this happens all the time, but a zoo isn’t nature, and animals should at least be safe from their captors.
Commenter Smitt says “I am done with zoos. I will never step foot in another one.” He/she is not alone; here is a really interesting article by critic Robert Everett-Green titled Why I’m never going to the zoo again , about why zoos are so over.
Zoos today are relics of the telegraphic age, lingering on at a time when photography and film can tell us vivid, detailed stories about animals without wrenching them physically from kin and habitat. The dream we share about zoos is that they allow some portion of wildlife to escape the disintegrating wilderness and flourish in our care. But there’s a zoo nightmare, too, which is that zoos distract us from taking real action to save the habitats we’re destroying.
