‘Track fault cause of train derailment’

General infrastructure manager of France’s national SNCF railroad company, Pierre Izard, said on Saturday that a joint bar linking two rails on a switch “broke away, it became detached and came out of its housing.”

According to Izard, the detached joint “lodged itself at the center of the switch, prevented the normal progression of the train’s wheels and seems to have caused the train’s derailment.”

The train crashed on Friday as it was passing through a station at Bretigny-sur-Orge, some 20 kilometers south of Paris, while en route from the capital to the central city of Limoges on Friday.

Dozens of people were also injured in the accident.

SNCF chief, Guillaume Pepy, said the detachment of the joint bar was the main focus of the investigations into the deadly accident.

“We have decided to check equipment of this nature on the entire network and are starting now,” he added.

An SNCF spokesman said on Friday that the train was carrying some 350 passengers when it derailed and crashed into the station platform.
