‘Trilateral talks on Syria possible’

“We are hoping there will be a trilateral meeting sometime next week between Moscow, Washington and Mr. Brahimi,” Masood Khan said on Thursday, referring to Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi.

Khan, whose country currently assumes the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, said that he had spoken with Brahimi on the issue of Syria.

“There are new contacts. There is a new effort under way” to find a political resolution of the violence in the Arab country, he added.

When asked about Brahimi’s plan, Khan said he was “making honest political endeavors” and that he wanted the Syrian government to be involved in the political process. “‘Plan’ is a big word but he wants a diplomatic breakthrough.”

On December 30, 2012, Brahimi unveiled a new plan that “could be adopted by the international community” to end the crisis in Syria. The UN envoy said he had discussed the plan with Russia and Syria.

On December 29, the Algerian UN representative also held a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on the same subject.

The turmoil in Syria began in March 2011.
