Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has proposed a five-member team for peace talks with the Pakistani government following an offer by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for peace and ceasefire.
“TTP wants Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Sami (JUI-S) chief Maulana Samiul Haq, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam cleric Mufti Kifayatullah, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) leader Professor Ibrahim, Lal Masjid’s Maulana Abdul Aziz, and Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf [PTI] Imran Khan to be part of their team,” said TTP spokesman Shahidullah Shahid in a Sunday telephone interview with Geo News.
Geo News’ anchor and senior journalist Hamid Mir further quoted Shahidullah Shahid as denying that the TTP wanted the proposed mediators to be part of the government’s team to negotiate peace with Taliban.
“Lately, some satellite news channels aired a report claiming TTP has demanded these dignitaries should be in the government team, which is misleading and groundless. We never asked them for that, instead we proposed these names for a panel, which would represent TTP,” Shahid said as quoted by the Geo News journalist.
Meanwhile, PTI leader Imran Khan said he would decide on the offer in a high-level party meeting scheduled for Monday.
“I have no clear idea about this development. However, I have full faith in the government’s peace talks committee. I suggest TTP choose its representatives from among its own leadership,” he stated.
Premier Sharif named a four-member committee on January 29 to facilitate the negotiations.
Sharif also called on the militants to observe a ceasefire.
The Pakistani prime minister condemned recent militant attacks on security forces and civilians across Pakistan.
Sharif has been an advocate of peace talks with the pro-Taliban militants since his election campaign, which ended in his May victory. Sharif has not publicly announced a full-fledged military operation against Taliban militants in Pakistan.
However, senior civilian and military officials have repeatedly said militants cannot “coerce” Islamabad into accepting their terms in the government-initiated peace process.
