“Tunisia has asked, through its ambassador in Ankara Mehrez Ben Rhouma, for the arrest and extradition of Saida Agrebi on the basis of a summons sent by Interpol Tunis to Interpol Ankara on Wednesday,” Tunisian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
Tunisian authorities have reportedly asked Ankara to “take the necessary legal measures to implement an international arrest warrant” issued in Tunisia in August 2011.
The extradition request was made after Tunisian media published photos of Agrebi attending an international meeting on family and social policy in Ankara on Wednesday and Thursday in her capacity as vice president of the World Family Organization.
The photos showed her being presented with an award, with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan also attending the conference.
The US-educated Agrebi was a key figure in the regime of Ben Ali and a close associate of his wife Leila Trabelsi.
In mid-July 2011, the Tunisian Organization of Mothers, the charity which Agrebi headed, filed a corruption lawsuit against her. Tunisian authorities, however, only imposed a travel ban four days after she had fled the country for Europe.
Agrebi is also accused of leading propaganda campaigns for the former regime under the cover of her organization.
Ousted Tunisian ruler, Ben Ali, and his wife have both been tried in absentia and sentenced to long jail terms for crimes including misappropriating public funds.
Saudi Arabia, which has been hosting the two since the January 2011 revolution in Tunisia, has turned a deaf ear to requests for the extradition of the ousted dictator.
