A pair of rockets have hit the US embassy in the Afghan capital, Kabul, sending hundreds of US diplomats and aid workers into bunkers, Press TV reports.
According to the US embassy, the incident took place early on Wednesday, leaving no casualties.
This is while Afghan officials have said that another two rockets have struck the neighboring districts to the embassy and three police officers were injured, when one of the rockets, which had not gone off on impact, detonated.
Kabul security Chief General Zahi Zahir went on to explain that the rocket exploded while the officers were trying to defuse it, adding the other one, which blasted immediately, caused no casualties or any significant damage.
Taliban militants quickly claimed responsibility for the attack, with its spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid saying four rockets were launched on the US embassy in the capital Kabul and heavy casualties were inflicted.
The blast comes amid rising tensions between Kabul and Washington over the controversial Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA), which allows the US troops to stay in war-torn Afghanistan beyond 2014 with immunity from prosecution under Afghan law.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has so far rejected signing the security deal with Washington, saying the matter should be left to the next government after the April elections.
The security pact with the US has also sparked nationwide anti-American protests in the war-stricken country. There are more than 43,000 US troops in Afghanistan.
The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but after 12 years, the foreign troops have not been able to establish security in the country.
